They didn’t manage to take everything with them, and it was only near the end of WWII that they transferred their collection of baroque masterpieces to Vaduz. SecessionIn 1897, 19 progressive artists broke away from the Künstlerhaus and the conservative artistic establishment it represented and formed the Vienna Secession (Sezession ). Their aim was to present current trends in contemporary art and shake off historicism. Among their number were Klimt, Josef Hoffman, Kolo Moser and Joseph M Olbrich (a former student of Wagner). Augustiner ChorherrenstiftRising like a vision above St Florian, this abbey dates at least to 819 and has been occupied by the canons regular, living under Augustinian rule, since 1071. Today its imposing yellow and white facade is overwhelmingly baroque. You can only visit the abbey’s interior by guided tour, which takes in the resplendent apartments adorned with rich stuccowork and frescoes. Hofkirche & Volkskunst MuseumInnsbruck’s pride and joy is the Gothic Hofkirche, one of Europe’s finest royal court churches. It was commissioned in 1553 by Ferdinand I, who enlisted top artists of the time such as Albrecht Dürer, Alexander Colin and Peter Vischer the Elder. Salzburg MuseumHoused in the baroque Neue Residenz palace, this flagship museum takes you on a fascinating romp through Salzburg’s past. A visit starts beneath the courtyard in the strikingly illuminated Kunsthalle , presenting rotating exhibitions of art, such as one spotlighting Hohe Tauern landscape paintings. Spanish Riding SchoolThe world-famous Spanish Riding School (Spanische Hofreitschule) is a Viennese institution truly reminiscent of the imperial Habsburg era. This unequalled equestrian show is performed by Lipizzaner stallions formerly kept at an imperial stud established at Lipizza (hence ‘Lipizzaner’; see). |
